John Will Seminar
I have managed to lock John Will in for one more seminar this year. John's
last seminar left everyone with such motivation that I actually saw technical
improvments in all that attended and in some cases even total re-development
of their technical game plan.
If you have already been to one of John's seminars you know this is a must
do, If you haven't what are you waiting for? Invest wisely, invest in your
own knowledge.

John Hatch wins Shooto
Friday night was crunch night for John Hatch, as 6 weeks of hard training
came to an end it was time to bottle all the emotions that a fighter goes
through and step into the ring for his Shooto match at the Corporate Contender
fight night held at BoxingWorks in the city. John's younger opponent showed
good aggression & tried to push the action from the start. Fortunately
John's hard intelligent training regime paid off and he was able to totally
control the action from the get go, scoring with several takedowns in both
rounds and showing off a fantastic ground game. John scored the win with
a very dominating performance.
John somehow manages to juggle, family, work, training and fighting into
his very busy lifestyle. I for one can certainly tell you how difficult
and tiring this can be. Well done John, I'm proud to stand beside you and
consider you a true martial artist
Asia Pac 2009 Nationals

The nationals have come & gone for another year & it was another
very successful comp with 326 competitors spread across every division.
Once again the atmosphere was competitive yet extremely friendly & without
a doubt this is the best run comp in Australia. Congrats must go to John
Will & wife Melisa for the organisation & ultimately setting such
a good culture, it's very refreshing not to hear constant abuse from the
sideline as happens at many of these comps.
Jake Farnsworth at 25kg fought in the 32kg division & although struggling
with illness over the last couple of months still managed to take 3rd, losing
on points to the eventual winner in his semi final match.
Robert Sabaruddin had a great match in the light weight blue belt division,
almost winning in the opening seconds with a flying armbar. But unfortunately
went down on points.
Andrew Fu won his first match in the light heavy weight blue belts with
an awesome display of technical BJJ. Andrew just went down on points In
his second match against a much more experienced opponent.
Peter Sardelich although not training for the last 7 weeks due to work commitments
still stepped up to compete in the light heavy weight purple belt division
& put up a good fight until he run out of gas & caught with an omoplata.
Great work guy's, we are all very proud of you.

BJJ Grading Results Monday 07/09/2009

Last night was the adults BJJ grading with seven colour belts & thirteen
white belts acheiving new ranks. The night ran very well with a good solid
display by all the white belts and several people receiving four stripes.
Keep up the hard work, there is a new wave of guy's coming through the ranks
with blue belts just around the corner.
Next up were the colour belts with a mind blowing display of technique
and wrestling that inspired all in attendance. The highlight of the night
was Luca Buratto being awarded his purple belt. Luca is one of our most
dedicated students and his attention to detail is unsurpassed. As othen
happens on the BJJ mat, Luca has become a close friend and I'm very proud
to have awarded him his new belt and must say that purple certainly does
suit him.
Pankration 2nd degree Black Belt in the Hills
I was honored to be awarded my 2nd degree black belt in pankration &

What a Great Weekend
Saturday we hosted John Will for his second seminar this year & what
a seminar it was. John took us through X-guard entries & sweeps &
then touched on some very interesting ways of re-inventing basics. As usual
his delivery was absolutely first class & he left everyone feeling very
inspired. For me personally & as a coach I take much more away from
John's seminars than just technique. Thank you John for shedding a little
more light on both our martial arts & life journeys.
Up early Sunday & off to Five Dock to officiate & coach at the Events BJJ comp. Four competitors entered from our club, Jake Farnsworth took first place in his kids division with another dominating display. Also in the kids division Jarred Ferreira, after only two months training, went the distance with the 2nd place getter. Awesome work Jarred. Andre Powell, although sight impaired stepped up for his first match. Narrowly missing out by 1 point in the last second of the match, also against the eventual 2nd place getter. Is there anything this guy can't achieve? Robert Sabaruddin continued his winning streak as a blue belt with the fastest submission of the day in his first match, flying armbar in 8 seconds. Rob then went on to win his division via armbar from guard. Over all another very successful comp by Events BJJ. Time for some R&R with the family, then it all starts again. What a great weekend.
Pankration Seminar

Kon Pappy, former Australian wrestling champion, pro boxer & one of
Australia's leading MMA officials will be at our club for a pankration/mma
seminar Saturday 18/07/09, 1:30pm to 3:00pm. Kon will also be explaining
the rules of Pankation, which will be
very hand with the Australian title just around the corner. I personlly
have trained with & known Kon for many years & for the price
of a casual class this is a must do seminar.
See Simon for further detail & to book your spot now.
Rob revels in MMA glory
Robert Sabaruddin fought his first Pro MMA match last night at Sharks Leagues
Club in Proud Warriour 1. In front of a capacity crowd, Rob wasted no time,
immediatly clinching & forcing his opponent onto the ropes. Using the
flex of the ropes the fight hit the gound in Robs guard. Showing great Jiu-Jitsu
skills Rob cut angle & went straight into armbar, spun under & ended
the fight in the first minute. This is a great result & a deserved conclusion
of his very committed training regime. Time for Rob to have a short break
& catch up on a bit of R&R. Have a great time in Bali, you really
do deserve it.

Also special mention to Luca Buratto & Andrew Fu who have worked tirelessly
with Rob & for there help as corner men as always.

NSW Pankration Championships 17/05/2009
Three competitors from our club fought in the state pankration titles on Sunday. Jake Farnsworth at 8 years old, impressed the crowd fighting up a division against 10 & 11 year olds that out weighed him by up to 11kgs, thats nearly 50% of his body weight. A very courageous effort & great sign of his potential in taking out 2nd place.
Ara Aroutiounian bowed out against the eventual winner of his division via a controversial judges decision that even left the referee shrugging his shoulders. Keep you chin up Ara, (or should that be down), Luck is sure to come your way soon, well done 3rd place.
Robert Sabaruddin fought with his usual flamboyant style, constantly looking
for submissions in his first match & then coming out in the final &
submitting his opponent in around 30 seconds via leg bar. Rob is now
the under 64kg NSW Pankration Champion. Well done Rob you definitely
deserve your title.
BJJ Grading 06/05/2009
Wednesday 06/05/09 saw our first BJJ grading for 2009, with 20 BJJ practitioners
testing their skills in search of the next piece of the never ending BJJ
puzzle. The technique displayed was almost flawless with the highlight of
the night being the crowning of two new blue belts. Ara Aroutiounian, still
only a young man, at 15 years of age showed why he is the future of our
club. Finishing his sparing strong after having 12 wrestles (all adults)
including white, blue, purple & black belts.
Warren Parsons, an experienced martial artist in his own right, also put
on a great display with some outstanding techniques in his sparing. Both
guy's were exhausted at the end after giving their all and leaving it all
on the mat. You forge some great friendships in our sort of training and
I can honestly say that I'm proud to have both Ara and Warren not only as
blue belts but also as lifelong friends. Well done to all that graded, I
look forward to meeting you on the mat soon.

02/05/2009 ISKA AND EVENTS BJJ
Well done to all that competed at the recent Events BJJ comp.
Jake Farnsworth 3rd (kids 8-10), Ara Aroutiounian 2nd (teens 14-16), Martyn
Harris 3rd (adults white belt), Robert Sabbaruddin 1st (blue belt lightweight)
& Kris Nubla went out in a very close match to the eventual winner (blue
belt middleweight).
Also to all that competed at ISKA on the weekend.
Jake Farnsworth 1st, Joey Tressler 2nd, Lleyton Smith 4th & Ara Aroutiounian
whom at 15 fought in the adults u92kg, only narrowly
being beat by a much bigger & older opponent. Peter Tressler was taken
to hospital & later cleared of back injuries after a nasty over
arching of his back in his semi final match, we wish him all the best in
his recovery & hope to see him on the matt soon.
28/03/2009 War on the North Shore 9
Friday night fight night attracted one of the biggest crowds yet. Unfortunately
Robert Sabbaruddins fight was canceled due to a no show from his opponent.
Rob was in the zone & totally focused for this fight, clearly disappointed
Rob is back in hard training in preparation for his next fight.
John Hatch fought even though his opponent weighed in at nearly 4kgs over
weight. John clearly won the first round scoring several takedowns on his
heavy hitting opponent. After being reversed John escaped the mount &
held top position, finishing the round in the dominant mount position. The
second round started at a hectic pace with John scoring another tackdown
& immediately working on an ankle lock. Fighting on instinct his larger
opponent was able to get to his knees & finish the fight via ground
& pound. This was a very spirited fight with both fighters receiving
great applause from the crowd. John showed some great skill & alot of
heart in this fight, afterwards many people in the crowd stopped to tell
me how impressed they were. You can hold your head high John, we are all
very proud of you & can't wait to see you on the mat soon.

10/03/2009 New Blue Belts
Last night I had the absolute pleasure of promoting two new blue belts,
Robert Sabbaruddin & Andrew Fu. Two of my most dedicated students, these
guy's are core members of our club & head our competition team. Their
thirst for knowledge is uncompromised & I can honestly say that it is
a privilege to be helping them in their martial arts journey, they represent
the very heart of our club. Wear your new belts with pride, you both thoroughly
deserve your rank.
Friday night saw the last training session for Scotsman Gary Mcquade, who
has now left our shores with work commitments overseas. Gary was put through
his paces, demonstrating some excellent technique & showing off some
very spirited wrestling. At the end of the night he was awarded 3 stripes
on his white belt. You will be surely missed in class, I wish you all the
best in your future endeavors & hope to hear from you soon.

Ara & Rob Show their Talent
Great results for Ara & Rob at the Jiu-Jitsu Pro Cup (non trials). Ara
totally dominated his match to win the 14-15 year old division, great work
Ara. Rob had 4 matches, winning the first 3 by submission in record time,
the quickest being in about 3 seconds. Ahead on point with 30 seconds left
in the final he unfortunatley fell victim to a triangle choke. Fantastic
display Rob. Judging by both performances, it looks like a great competition
year ahead.
BJJ Grading Results 06/02/09
Congrats to all the kids that participated in the recent grading. The technique was excellent and the wrestling was exceptional. Just goes to show that no matter what level or age, commitment equals results.
Helio Gracie, creator of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, dies at age 95
By Associated Press
7:57 PM CST, January 29, 2009
SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) Helio Gracie, one of the main creators of
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that gained worldwide popularity, has died. He was 95.
Gracie died Thursday morning and was buried in the afternoon near his home in the mountain resort town of Petropolis near Rio de Janeiro, according to a short statement posted on the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy Web site.
The Agencia Estado news service said he died of pneumonia.
Gracie introduced a series of adaptations to traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu that emphasized leverage and position as a way to compensate for size differences among opponents.
More than 40 sons and grandsons of Gracie and his brother Carlos helped popularize the mixed martial art around the world.
One of Gracie's sons, Rorion, was a founder of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, a hugely popular martial-arts combat sport in the United States, where it is seen as a more exciting alternative to boxing and wrestling.
Gracie is survived by his wife and nine children.

ISKA World Cup Homebush 2008
Congratulations to all that Competed, Jake Farnsworth totally dominated
his division, not having a single point scored against him on his way to
being crowned the ISKA 8 year old, under 25kg world cup champion. It's amazing
how calm & relaxed Jake is until he gets on the mat, stares his opponent
down & then as if flicking a light switch it's game on.
Ara Aroutriounian also competed in both BJJ & Greco Roman wrestling,
fighting at a 15kg + disadvantage in the BJJ. Ara had a great match, finishing
strong on mount position & taking second place.
Sunday morning & back to the ISKA world cup for the adults comp. Robert Sabbaruddin backed up competing in BJJ & Freestyle Wrestling, narrowly missing the finals in BJJ. Veniamin Gialouris submitted all his opponents to take 1st place. Martyn Harris took 2nd place, also getting a submission in the semi finals. Andrew Fu, also getting a submission in his first match was just out pointed in his semi final match, but went on to take 3rd place. Give yourselves a pat on the back, with great dedication comes great results. Many thanks to my wife & daughter for the video's, footage will be available soon.
