Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport in which a wide variety of techniques are used including striking and grappling. One of the earliest forms of MMA can be traced back to the ancient olympic games in 648 BC.
Greek Pankration, invented as a result of combining boxing and wrestling, was a brutal sport in which the only rules were no biting or eye gouging. A match was won by submission and would often end in unconsciousness, or even death of an opponent.
Modern MMA as we know it today first started in the 1920’s with the Gracie challenge issued by BJJ founders Carlos and Helio Gracie. These contests, known In Brazil as Vale Tudo, were upheld by generations of the Gracie family. Such matches were also being held in Japan with the introduction of the professional Shooto organization in 1985.
Since the early days, rules have been added for the safety and longevity of the fighters. MMA is constantly evolving and is one of the most exciting arts / sports on the planet.
